Passports: Required to be active for at least three months from your return date (six months is recommended). If your passport is set to expire before then, you will likely not be able to board a flight to Europe.
Currency Exchange: Many tour guides, shop owners, restaurateurs, etc. in Italy have a preference for cash transactions--with card transactions possibly incurring a 20% surcharge. For this reason, it is recommended to have some euros on hand as you travel. Local banks in the U.S. may be able to exchange some cash before you travel--though you will likely get the best exchange rate if you request at least a few weeks ahead of time.
